Who was Gabriela Silang?

María Josefa Gabriela Cariño de Silang (1731–1763) was a Filipina revolutionary leader and national heroine of the Philippines. She is best known for leading a resistance against Spanish colonial rule in the 18th century after the assassination of her husband, Diego Silang, who was also a revolutionary.

After his death, Gabriela took command of their movement, rallying troops and fighting for independence in northern Luzon. She became a symbol of courage, resilience, and anti-colonial defiance — often called the “Joan of Arc of Ilocos.”
